PM Modi to launch Garib Kalyan Rojgar Yojana worth Rs 50,000 cr

Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India is all set to launch a Rs 50,000 crore employment scheme – Garib Kalyan Rojgar Yojana for returnee migrant labourers on June 20. The scheme is expected to provide income support to migrant workers who have returned to their home states during the coronavirus lockdown. The Yojana primarily will focus on six states catering to the maximum number of returnee labourers.

Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Finance Minister, at a media briefing prior to the launch on June 18, said that the scheme will empower and provide a livelihood for 125 days to the returnee migrants. The PM will launch the Garib Kalyan Rojgar Yojana from Telihar village, Khagaria district, Bihar through video conferencing. Nitish Kumar, Chief Minister of Bihar and Sushil Modi, Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar will also be present at the occasion.

The six states – Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand and Odisha wherein the scheme will be implemented have a total of 116 districts with more than 25,000 migrant workers in each district, said the Finance Minister.

The 125-day programme will be focused on the implementation of 25 different types of works to provide employment to migrant workers. Moreover, the scheme will also be used for creating infrastructure in the rural regions of the country and the scheme is worth a total of Rs 50,000 crore.

The Finance Minister said, “This (Rs 50,000 crore) is part of the Budget. What is the key thing about this…we are bringing convergence, we are frontloading the money…The other key thing is it is directly tying up with all the migrant workers who have reached their districts…all of them are going to result in asset creation.”
