India is set to introduce a single legally recognised reference for time across government, business and other official activities from March 2027. The Centre has notified the Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026, under which Indian Standard Time (IST) will serve as the common reference for legal, administrative, commercial and official purposes.

The rules were notified on August 27, 2026, and will come into effect after a 180-day transition period, allowing organisations time to align their systems.
IST to Become Common Official Reference
India already follows IST as its official civil time, but the new framework aims to ensure that time-dependent systems across the country are synchronised with an authoritative Indian time source.

The move is part of the government’s broader “One Nation, One Time” initiative and is intended to bring greater consistency to systems that depend on accurate timestamps.
No Change to India’s Time Zone

The new rules do not mean India is changing its time zone.
IST will continue to remain 5 hours and 30 minutes ahead of UTC. For ordinary users, clocks and phones will continue to show the same Indian time.
The major changes will take place behind the scenes, particularly in systems that generate, record and synchronise timestamps.
Impact on Digital and Critical Infrastructure
Accurate and consistent time references can be important for several sectors where even small differences in timestamps matter.
These include banking and digital payments, telecommunications, railways, airports, power systems, government databases and other digital infrastructure.
The new framework will require relevant systems to align with authorised sources for Indian Standard Time.
India Strengthens Its Own Timekeeping Infrastructure
India’s national time scale is maintained by the CSIR-National Physical Laboratory (CSIR-NPL), New Delhi, using highly precise atomic clocks and other advanced timekeeping systems.
The government is also working to reduce dependence on foreign satellite-based timing sources. Technologies such as NavIC, India’s satellite navigation system, can support the wider dissemination of authorised Indian time.
High-Precision Time Distribution Being Tested
India has also been developing high-precision systems for distributing IST.
A White Rabbit-based IST dissemination demonstration network was commissioned in July 2026 at the Regional Reference Standards Laboratory in Bengaluru. The technology has been demonstrated for sectors including banking, telecommunications, power, transportation and digital governance.
Certain Specialised Uses Exempted
The rules recognise that some specialised applications may need different time references.
Activities involving scientific research, astronomy and navigation, among other specialised uses, may continue to follow appropriate time standards or arrangements.
Focus on Reliable and Secure Time
The new framework is aimed at ensuring that critical systems across India operate with a consistent and trusted time reference.
While citizens are unlikely to notice a visible change to their clocks, the shift could have a significant impact on the synchronisation, reliability and security of India’s digital and critical infrastructure from 2027.
