The State Bank of India (SBI) has decided to set up 5,000-6,000 rural kiosks to encourage banking habits among the rural people of India. SBI is trying to bring corporate sector for this programme.

SBI is planning to set up rural kiosks and issuing 'smart cards' which will help farmers to do banking transactions with cards. SBI has already created a new business group known as 'Rural Business Group', which is being headed by a deputy Managing director. SBI is planning to spread rural business in around 6.5 lakh villages of the country. The pilot projects are being run in states like Mizoram, Uttaranchal, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and planning to extend it to all over the country.
