The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has approved a provision of ₹400 crore for the purchase of 250 new air-conditioned electric buses to strengthen the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) fleet during the financial year 2026-27.
Under the proposal, 100 buses with a seating capacity of 50 passengers and 150 buses with a capacity of 41 passengers will be procured. The total expenditure on the purchase is estimated at ₹425.50 crore. Of this, ₹400 crore will be provided by the state government, while the remaining ₹25.50 crore will be met by UPSRTC from its own resources.
Electric Fleet to Support NCR Pollution Control
The expansion of the electric bus fleet is also linked to efforts to reduce air pollution in the National Capital Region. As per the directions of the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), only CNG, electric and BS-VI vehicles will be permitted to enter Delhi from November 1, 2026.

The addition of electric buses is expected to help UPSRTC align its public transport services operating between Uttar Pradesh and Delhi with the applicable environmental requirements. The buses will also support services to major religious and tourist destinations across the state.
The expansion is expected to create employment opportunities for drivers, conductors and technical personnel involved in bus maintenance. Increased bus operations could also support employment in roadside facilities, including restaurants, eateries and other passenger services.
