Harjit Singh Grewal Appointed Chairman of National Commission for Minorities

The Centre has appointed Harjit Singh Grewal as the new Chairperson of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM), filling the top position in the statutory body responsible for safeguarding the rights and interests of minority communities in the country.


The appointments were notified by the Ministry of Minority Affairs, which also announced the appointment of Munawari Begum as Vice-Chairperson and Glenn E. Souza Ticlo as a Member of the Commission.

Three-Year Tenure for New Appointees


According to the official notification, Harjit Singh Grewal, Munawari Begum and Glenn E. Souza Ticlo will serve for a three-year term from the date they assume charge of their respective positions, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

The appointments complete the leadership team of the National Commission for Minorities after the post of Chairperson remained vacant for some time.


Experienced Political Leader

Harjit Singh Grewal is a senior BJP leader from Punjab and has been associated with the party for several decades. Over the years, he has held various organisational responsibilities and has been actively involved in public and political affairs in the state.

His appointment is expected to bring experienced leadership to the Commission as it continues to work on issues related to the welfare, protection and empowerment of minority communities.

Leadership Positions Filled

Alongside Grewal’s appointment, Munawari Begum has been named the Vice-Chairperson of the Commission, while Glenn E. Souza Ticlo has been appointed as a Member.

The appointments strengthen the Commission’s leadership at a time when it continues to engage with issues concerning minority rights, policy implementation and community welfare.

Vacancy Filled After Previous Tenure Ended

The position of NCM Chairperson had been vacant after the completion of the tenure of the previous Commission headed by Iqbal Singh Lalpura.

With the appointment of Harjit Singh Grewal and the induction of the new Vice-Chairperson and Member, the Centre has reconstituted the Commission’s leadership to ensure the continued functioning of the statutory body and its mandate of addressing issues concerning minority communities across the country.
