State-owned defence manufacturer Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) has appointed Shailesh Vagerwal as its new Chairman and Managing Director (CMD). He assumed charge on July 9, 2026, following his appointment by the Ministry of Defence, marking a new leadership chapter for one of India’s leading defence public sector enterprises.
The appointment has been formally communicated to the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE through a regulatory filing by the company.
Appointment Comes into Effect
According to BDL, Shailesh Vagerwal’s appointment follows an order issued by the Ministry of Defence on June 18, 2026. He officially took charge as CMD on July 9, 2026.
The company also confirmed that Vagerwal is not related to any member of BDL’s Board of Directors and is eligible to hold the position under the applicable provisions of SEBI regulations.
Nearly Three Decades of Defence Manufacturing Experience
A senior officer of the Indian Ordnance Factories Service (IOFS), Shailesh Vagerwal brings close to 30 years of experience in India’s defence manufacturing sector.
Before joining BDL, he served as Chief General Manager of the Ordnance Factory, Khamaria, Jabalpur, under Munitions India Limited, where he was responsible for overseeing key production and operational activities.
Held Several Leadership Positions
During his career, Vagerwal has worked at several important defence manufacturing units, including:
- Ordnance Factory Dum Dum
- Ordnance Factory Itarsi
- Ordnance Factory Khamaria
- Corporate Office of Munitions India Limited, Pune
Over the years, he has handled a wide range of responsibilities covering ammunition manufacturing, strategic planning, quality assurance, project execution, research and development, materials management, industrial relations, export initiatives, and administrative functions.
His broad experience is expected to strengthen BDL’s operational capabilities as the company continues to expand its role in India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem.
Strong Academic Background
Vagerwal holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from MBM Engineering College, Jodhpur.

He also earned a Master of Science in Explosive Ordnance Engineering from Cranfield University, United Kingdom, equipping him with specialised expertise in defence technologies and ammunition systems.
