In a key development in the public sector logistics space, the Public Enterprises Selection Board has recommended Ajit Kumar Panda for the post of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Container Corporation of India Limited.
The recommendation was made during PESB Meeting No. 30/2026 held on April 18, following a competitive selection process that included interviews with eight senior candidates from across CONCOR, Indian Railways, RITES, and other government organisations.
Currently serving as Director (Project & Services) at CONCOR, Ajit Kumar Panda emerged as the preferred candidate for the top leadership role. His appointment, however, will be finalised after approval from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).
A seasoned railway professional, Panda brings over three decades of experience in the Indian Railways and allied organisations. A 1990-batch officer of the Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME), he holds a Mechanical Engineering degree from NIT Rourkela and a Master’s in Thermal Engineering from IIT Delhi.
Over the years, he has handled a wide range of responsibilities, including infrastructure development, rolling stock management, and project execution. He has previously served in key roles at Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), the Railway Board, and various railway zones.
During his tenure at RVNL, Panda played an important role in executing large-scale infrastructure projects, including the establishment of modern factories and depots. At the Railway Board, he contributed to rolling stock modernisation and helped drive higher production levels of locomotives, coaches, and wagons.

Officials say his extensive experience in both operations and project planning positions him well to lead CONCOR at a time when logistics efficiency and multimodal connectivity are becoming increasingly critical for India’s economic growth.
If approved by the ACC, Panda’s appointment is expected to provide strategic direction to CONCOR as it continues to expand its role in India’s freight and logistics ecosystem.
