Container Corporation of India Ltd. (CONCOR) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited (VISL) to develop a Container Freight Station (CFS) near Vizhinjam International Seaport in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The initiative is aimed at strengthening India’s port-led logistics ecosystem and enhancing multimodal connectivity in southern India.
MoU Signed in Presence of State Leadership
The agreement was signed on February 23, 2026, in the presence of Pinarayi Vijayan, Chief Minister of Kerala, and V. N. Vasavan, Minister for Cooperation & Ports. Senior officials including Kowsigan, Secretary – Shipping & Ports, Government of Kerala, Sanjay Swarup, CMD, CONCOR, and Ms. G. Gayatri, Area Head (South), CONCOR, were also present.
The MoU was formally signed by Mr. A. Vijuvin, Cluster Head (Chennai), on behalf of CONCOR and Ms Divya Iyer, Managing Director, VISL.
Key Features of the Proposed Facility
The Container Freight Station will be developed in the vicinity of Vizhinjam International Seaport, with VISL providing land on mutually agreed terms. The facility is expected to include:
- Customs-bonded areas
- Warehousing facilities
- Container handling and storage yards
- Import-export cargo handling infrastructure
- Weighbridges and allied logistics systems
Both organisations will now move toward a detailed agreement covering operational and commercial arrangements.
Boost to EXIM Trade and Logistics Efficiency
Vizhinjam International Seaport is emerging as a major deep-water transshipment hub and a gateway for global maritime trade. The planned CFS is expected to:
- Strengthen hinterland connectivity
- Improve cargo handling efficiency
- Support India’s export-import (EXIM) trade growth
- Build an integrated logistics ecosystem in Kerala
The collaboration aligns with CONCOR’s strategy to expand rail-led multimodal logistics infrastructure and deliver seamless end-to-end supply chain solutions.
