In a fresh round of gubernatorial appointments, President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Jishnu Dev Varma as the new Governor of Maharashtra. The appointment is part of a wider reshuffle of Governors across several states.
Dev Varma previously served as the Governor of Telangana and will now take charge in Maharashtra, one of India’s most politically and economically important states.
Experienced Leader from the Northeast
Jishnu Dev Varma is a senior political leader with deep roots in the politics of Tripura. Over the years, he has been closely associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party and has played an important role in strengthening the party’s presence in the northeastern region.
His political career gained prominence in 2018 when the BJP formed the government in Tripura. Following the party’s victory, Dev Varma was appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister of the state.
Key Roles in Tripura Government
During his tenure as Deputy Chief Minister from 2018 to 2023, Dev Varma handled several important portfolios including finance, power, planning, panchayat raj, and rural development.
In these roles, he worked on strengthening economic planning, improving rural infrastructure, and enhancing the state’s power sector. His tenure also focused on implementing central government schemes aimed at accelerating development and improving public services.
New Role in Maharashtra
After serving as the Governor of Telangana, Dev Varma’s appointment as Governor of Maharashtra marks another significant step in his public life. With his administrative and political experience, he is expected to bring valuable insight to the constitutional role.
