In a major administrative reshuffle, the Ministry of Home Affairs has appointed Sanjay Arora, a Tamil Nadu-cadre IPS officer as Commissioner of Police, Delhi. He was heading the paramilitary force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), before being moved to Delhi. He is scheduled to take the oath as the city’s new police chief on Monday.

Arora, who will succeed Rakesh Asthana, a Gujarat-cadre IPS officer, as Delhi police commissioner, will serve the post till 2025. His appointment was made in the wake of Asthana’s retirement, who retired after serving 38 long years in the Police department. While serving as Superintendent of Police of Tamil Nadu Police Special Task Force (STF), he was part of the team who nabbed the dreaded Veerappan. For his valiant acts, he was awarded the chief minister’s gallantry medal for bravery.

Arora, who holds a B.Tech degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, has also served as Coimbatore police commissioner between 2002 and 2004. He has served in several paramilitary forces like the Border Security Force (BSF), the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), before being appointed as Director General of the paramilitary ITBP in August last year.

Meanwhile, outgoing Delhi police commissioner Rakesh Asthana has expressed his desire to continue working for the welfare of the Police and the public. The 1984-batch Gujarat cadre IPS officer brought some major changes in the police administration of the capital city, while serving as Police Commissioner, such as merging Police Control Rooms units with police stations and separating law and order from the investigation unit, which he believes, is going to be the game changer in the functioning of Delhi Police and will make it more efficient.
