Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday flagged off 50 state-of-the-art electric buses for Bhavnagar under the PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme, marking a significant step towards expanding sustainable urban transport in Gujarat. The buses were virtually inaugurated during the Prime Minister’s visit to Assam, where he also launched development projects worth over ₹5,450 crore.
With this rollout, Bhavnagar has become the first city in Gujarat to receive electric buses under the national scheme. While 50 buses have been introduced in the initial phase, a total of 100 buses are planned for the city, aimed at strengthening public transport with cleaner and more efficient mobility options.
The newly inducted buses are air-conditioned and equipped with CCTV cameras to enhance passenger safety. They are also designed to be accessible for Divyangs (persons with disabilities), supporting inclusive transportation for all sections of society.
Under the wider implementation of the scheme in Gujarat, 750 electric buses are planned across eight cities, including Vadodara, Rajkot, Gandhinagar, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar, Junagadh, Gandhidham and Navsari. The Gujarat Urban Development Mission (GUDM) has been designated as the nodal agency to oversee operations and execution.

The PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme aims to promote clean, reliable and sustainable public transport systems across Indian cities, reduce carbon emissions and improve urban air quality. Officials said the initiative reflects the government’s broader push to modernise urban mobility while advancing the transition to electric transport nationwide.
