PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana

The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PM-SGMBY) is set to revolutionize India’s renewable energy sector by unlocking an estimated ₹1.2 trillion opportunity, as highlighted in a recent report by SBI Capital Markets. This ambitious initiative is poised to drive growth in residential rooftop solar installations and help India achieve its target of 30 GW solar capacity.

The scheme offers substantial subsidies for capital costs, significantly reducing the payback period for investments in rooftop solar systems by 4-5 years. This financial incentive is expected to encourage widespread adoption of solar energy, particularly among residential users. The report emphasizes that the ecosystem created by this initiative is likely to benefit various stakeholders, including manufacturers, project developers, and engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) service providers.

Breakdown of the ₹1.2 Trillion Opportunity

The ₹1.2 trillion potential of PM-SGMBY is distributed across several components in the solar value chain. Solar modules constitute the largest share, accounting for ₹480 billion, followed by inverters (₹275 billion), electrical components (₹200 billion), and mounting structures (₹90 billion). Project developers and EPC players stand to gain significantly by adopting a capital expenditure (capex) model, where consumers finance and own installations while availing of government subsidies.

Residential Rooftop Solar: A Game-Changer

Residential rooftop solar installations are expected to be the driving force behind the sector’s growth. The report notes that states with high residential electricity tariffs and favourable net metering policies will likely see the highest adoption rates. Non-utility solar installations, encompassing residential, commercial, and industrial (C&I) segments, are also gaining momentum, bolstered by declining costs of solar modules and EPC services.

As advancements in solar cell technology make off-grid solutions more accessible, annual additions to non-utility solar capacity are projected to reach 20 GW by FY27. This growth trajectory underscores the role of PM-SGMBY in expanding solar adoption and meeting India’s renewable energy goals.

State-Wise Leaders in Solar Rooftop Capacity

Currently, five states dominate India’s solar rooftop capacity, collectively accounting for 70% of the total. Gujarat leads with 4,822 MW, followed by Maharashtra (2,847 MW), Rajasthan (1,415 MW), Kerala (966 MW), and Tamil Nadu (876 MW). These states benefit from strong policy support, industrial growth, and state-specific incentives that make solar energy adoption more attractive.

Catalyzing Green Energy Transition

The growth in solar energy adoption is linked to multiple factors, including industrialization, tariff differentials, and supportive metering policies. By promoting residential solar installations, PM-SGMBY aims to democratize green energy access, reduce dependency on conventional energy sources, and contribute to a sustainable future.

The SBI Capital Markets report underscores that PM-SGMBY is more than a subsidy-driven scheme—it is a catalyst for a thriving solar ecosystem. By inducing innovation and investment in the renewable energy sector, the initiative aligns with India’s broader vision of achieving energy security and sustainability.

As residential installations increase, the scheme is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the renewable energy landscape and accelerating India’s transition toward a greener, cleaner future.
