Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and Meta Platforms have joined hands to develop a large-scale AI-enabled data centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat, marking a significant milestone in India’s growing digital infrastructure landscape.

The partnership, announced through a regulatory filing, will see Reliance build a dedicated 168 MW data centre for Meta. The facility is expected to be completed within the next two years and has been designed with provisions for future expansion as demand for artificial intelligence and digital services continues to rise.
Meta’s First Dedicated Data Centre Capacity in India

The upcoming facility will be Meta’s first built-to-suit data centre capacity in India and is expected to support the company’s expanding global infrastructure and AI computing requirements.

As artificial intelligence applications become increasingly resource-intensive, global technology companies are investing heavily in advanced data centres capable of supporting large-scale computing workloads. The Jamnagar project is expected to play an important role in strengthening Meta’s infrastructure footprint while deepening its presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing digital markets.
Reliance to Provide End-to-End Infrastructure Services

Under the agreement, Reliance will oversee the complete lifecycle of the project, including design, construction, utility management, power supply, connectivity and operational services.
The company plans to position itself as a comprehensive infrastructure partner capable of supporting hyperscale data centre projects in India. Officials believe this integrated approach will help accelerate deployment timelines and ensure efficient management of large-scale digital infrastructure.
The collaboration also expands the long-standing relationship between Reliance and Meta, which already cooperate across digital connectivity, technology and commerce initiatives.
Jamnagar Chosen for Strategic Advantages
The companies have selected Jamnagar due to several advantages that make it suitable for large-scale data centre operations.
The location offers access to renewable energy resources, reliable water availability and strong connectivity through submarine cable landing stations along India’s western coast. It also benefits from Jio’s extensive fibre network, providing robust digital connectivity for global operations.
These factors are expected to support the facility’s long-term scalability and operational efficiency.
Focus on Sustainable Infrastructure
Sustainability is a key component of the project. The data centre will be powered by renewable energy and will use desalinated seawater for cooling operations.
By incorporating cleaner energy sources and efficient cooling mechanisms, the companies aim to reduce the environmental impact of the facility while supporting their broader sustainability commitments.
Industry experts note that sustainable infrastructure is becoming increasingly important as demand for energy-intensive AI computing continues to grow worldwide.
Supporting India’s AI and Digital Economy
The project aligns with the Government of India’s efforts to promote data centres as strategic national infrastructure and attract long-term investments in digital technologies.
With artificial intelligence, cloud computing and digital services driving new economic opportunities, large-scale data centres are emerging as critical assets for supporting innovation, business growth and digital transformation.

The facility is expected to contribute to India’s ambition of becoming a global hub for technology and AI-driven development.
Long-Term Vision for AI Infrastructure
Commenting on the partnership, Reliance Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani said the project reflects India’s growing readiness to play a leading role in the global AI ecosystem.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg described the initiative as an important step in the company’s long-term strategy for India and its broader global AI infrastructure expansion.
As demand for advanced computing capabilities continues to increase, the Jamnagar facility is expected to become one of the country’s most significant AI-focused digital infrastructure projects. The collaboration also highlights India’s increasing importance as a destination for technology investments and next-generation digital infrastructure development.
