The Global Hydrogen & Renewable Energy Summit 2025, held on March 12–13, 2025 in Kochi, Kerala, brought together policymakers, energy experts, industry leaders, researchers, and investors to discuss strategies for advancing clean energy adoption and achieving sustainability goals. During the summit, Shri K. Krishnankutty, Hon’ble Minister for Electricity, Government of Kerala, outlined the state’s roadmap for expanding renewable energy generation and developing a robust green hydrogen ecosystem.

Addressing the gathering, the Minister highlighted the growing challenges posed by climate change, rising energy demand, and the need for energy security. He emphasised that Kerala is actively pursuing renewable energy solutions and innovative technologies to reduce dependence on conventional energy sources while ensuring reliable and sustainable power supply.
Expanding Renewable Energy Capacity

Speaking on Kerala’s energy transition efforts, Krishnankutty noted that the state has been focusing on decentralised renewable energy generation, particularly through rooftop solar initiatives. These programmes have encouraged wider public participation and contributed to expanding clean energy access across communities.

He highlighted the government’s efforts to promote solarisation across various sectors, including agriculture, with initiatives aimed at supporting farmers and improving energy efficiency. Such measures are expected to strengthen distributed energy generation while reducing reliance on traditional power sources.
The Minister also referred to Kerala’s achievements in solar energy adoption, including large-scale installations across public infrastructure and the development of innovative renewable energy projects.

Focus on Green Hydrogen Development
A key theme of the discussion was Kerala’s growing focus on green hydrogen as part of its long-term energy strategy. Krishnankutty noted that the state is working towards creating an enabling ecosystem for hydrogen production, utilisation, and future exports.
He highlighted ongoing efforts to formulate policy frameworks and facilitate investments that can support the growth of hydrogen-based industries. Kerala’s geographical advantages, including access to ports and water resources, position it favourably for the development of a green hydrogen economy.
The Minister also referred to initiatives being undertaken under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, including pilot projects aimed at exploring hydrogen applications in transportation and other sectors.
Building an Integrated Clean Energy Ecosystem
Kerala is also advancing projects in areas such as floating solar power, small hydropower generation, energy storage technologies, and renewable energy integration. According to the Minister, these initiatives form part of a broader strategy to build a diversified and resilient energy ecosystem capable of supporting future energy requirements.
Discussions at the summit highlighted the importance of combining renewable power generation with advanced storage solutions and emerging technologies to improve grid reliability and optimise energy utilisation.
Collaboration and Innovation Key to Success
The Minister emphasised that achieving clean energy goals will require strong collaboration among governments, research institutions, industry stakeholders, and technology providers. Public-private partnerships and innovation-driven approaches are expected to play a crucial role in accelerating renewable energy deployment and hydrogen adoption.
Participants at the summit explored opportunities around renewable energy financing, hydrogen infrastructure, policy support, and technology innovation aimed at supporting India’s broader sustainability objectives.
Towards a Sustainable Energy Future
The summit served as a platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration among national and international stakeholders working to accelerate the global clean energy transition.
Industry leaders and policymakers agreed that renewable energy and green hydrogen will be critical in addressing climate challenges, enhancing energy security, and creating new economic opportunities.
The event reinforced Kerala’s commitment to becoming a leader in clean energy innovation and highlighted the state’s efforts to build a sustainable, resilient, and future-ready energy ecosystem.
