The Global Hydrogen & Renewable Energy Summit 2025, held on March 12–13, 2025 in Kochi, Kerala, brought together policymakers, power sector leaders, renewable energy experts, industry stakeholders, and researchers to discuss the future of sustainable energy. During the summit, Pankaj Kumar, IAS, Managing Director, Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL), outlined Uttar Pradesh’s vision for green hydrogen and its growing role in supporting energy security, decarbonisation, and long-term economic growth.

Addressing the gathering, Kumar highlighted the transformative potential of green hydrogen in India’s clean energy transition. He noted that green hydrogen offers a promising solution for storing renewable energy and reducing dependence on fossil fuels, particularly in sectors that are difficult to decarbonise through conventional electrification alone.
Green Hydrogen Emerging as a Strategic Energy Solution

Speaking on the significance of green hydrogen, Kumar explained that it is produced through the electrolysis of water using renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power, making it a zero-carbon energy carrier. As renewable energy generation continues to expand across India, hydrogen can play an important role in balancing supply and demand while enabling long-term energy storage.

He emphasised that green hydrogen has the potential to support industrial decarbonisation and contribute to reducing emissions in sectors with traditionally high carbon footprints.
Uttar Pradesh’s Green Hydrogen Policy

Highlighting the state’s proactive approach, Kumar discussed the Green Hydrogen Policy of Uttar Pradesh, which aims to attract investments and accelerate the development of a hydrogen ecosystem within the state.
The policy includes a range of incentives designed to encourage project developers and investors. Measures such as capital support, facilitation of land availability, and fiscal incentives have been incorporated to strengthen the business case for green hydrogen projects.
He also noted that the state is investing in research and innovation to support the development of advanced hydrogen technologies and create a skilled workforce capable of driving future growth in the sector.
Scaling Renewable Energy for Hydrogen Growth
Kumar stressed that achieving India’s ambitious hydrogen production targets will require significant expansion of renewable energy capacity. Green hydrogen production is closely linked to the availability of clean electricity, making large-scale renewable energy deployment a critical component of the strategy.
He highlighted the importance of strengthening power infrastructure, improving grid management, and promoting collaborative approaches between states to optimise renewable energy utilisation and reduce overall costs.
The discussions at the summit explored how integrated planning between renewable energy generation and hydrogen production can create a more resilient and efficient energy ecosystem.
Collaboration and Innovation Key to Success
The UPPCL Managing Director emphasised that government support, technological innovation, industry participation, and public-private partnerships will be essential for accelerating hydrogen adoption.
He noted that reducing production costs remains one of the sector’s primary challenges, but continued advancements in technology and economies of scale are expected to improve commercial viability in the coming years.
Participants at the summit discussed opportunities around hydrogen infrastructure, storage technologies, industrial applications, and policy frameworks aimed at creating a sustainable hydrogen economy.
Driving India’s Clean Energy Future
The summit served as a platform for exchanging ideas on renewable energy, green hydrogen, energy storage, and sustainable infrastructure development. Policymakers, researchers, investors, and industry leaders explored strategies to accelerate clean energy adoption and strengthen India’s energy transition journey.
Experts agreed that green hydrogen will play an increasingly important role in achieving national climate goals, enhancing energy security, and supporting long-term economic development.
The event reinforced Uttar Pradesh’s commitment to advancing clean energy technologies and highlighted the growing importance of state-level initiatives in shaping India’s future hydrogen economy.
