New Delhi: Marking World Environment Day 2026, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav inaugurated 18 ‘Namo Oxygen Parks’ across the national capital as part of a major urban greening initiative aimed at improving air quality, enhancing biodiversity, and expanding green cover.
The parks, launched from the Maidangarhi area in South Delhi, have been developed as urban green lungs featuring indigenous tree species and environmentally sustainable infrastructure. Unlike conventional parks, the Namo Oxygen Parks prioritize native species such as peepal, banyan, jamun, and mango, which are known for their ecological benefits and contribution to urban biodiversity.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced an ambitious target of planting 15 lakh trees and saplings across Delhi during 2026. She highlighted that the Delhi government’s recent “Green Budget” earmarks 21 percent of total expenditure for environment-related initiatives, underscoring the administration’s commitment to sustainable urban development.
The initiative forms part of the nationwide ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign and seeks to encourage community participation in environmental conservation. Officials emphasized that the focus extends beyond plantation drives to ensuring the long-term survival and maintenance of trees through public engagement and institutional support.
In addition to the park inaugurations, the event witnessed the release of several key environmental documents, including the Working Plan for the National Capital Territory of Delhi (2026–27 to 2036–37), a long-term framework for environmental governance and conservation, and the Delhi Bird Atlas, a comprehensive citizen science-based record of the city’s avian biodiversity.
The Delhi government has indicated that the 18 parks represent the first phase of a broader urban afforestation strategy, with plans to develop additional oxygen parks across the city in the coming years. The initiative is expected to contribute to pollution mitigation, climate resilience, and the creation of healthier public spaces for residents.
