B Sairam appointed new CMD Northern Coalfields Limited

In a recent development, B Sairam has been appointed as the new Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), the flagship subsidiary of Coal India Limited based in Singrauli. His appointment to the position took effect on Wednesday.


With over 33 years of dedicated service in the coal sector, Sairam brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his new role. Graduating as a mining engineer from NIT Raipur, he has worked across various areas within the coal industry, including mine operations, planning, logistics, and regulatory affairs.

Sairam’s commitment to excellence and innovation is underscored by his academic background, which includes a rigorous 15-month full-time residential PGDM in Energy Management at NTPC School of Business Delhi. He also underwent a transformative 15-day immersion program at Nanyang Business School, Singapore, enhancing his understanding of global energy dynamics.

Before his appointment as CMD of NCL, Sairam served as Director (Technical) at Central Coalfields Limited in Ranchi. During his tenure there, he played crucial roles in enhancing the company’s organic growth and developing coal logistics infrastructure.


Sairam’s leadership extends beyond business operations to community development projects and sustainability initiatives. As Executive Director at Coal India Limited (CIL), he was key in aligning the company’s sustainability vision with UN sustainability goals.

Northern Coalfields Limited operates 10 highly mechanized mines in the Singrauli and Sonebhadra Districts of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, respectively. The company is targeting over 135 million tonnes of coal production and dispatch in the fiscal year 2023-24.
