Nitin Kareer

In a significant administrative development, the Maharashtra government has appointed Nitin Kareer, a 1988 batch IAS officer, as the new Chief Secretary of the state. Dr. Kareer, who is currently serving as the additional chief secretary (finance), will take over the reins from Manoj Saunik, a senior IAS officer from the 1987 batch.

The decision was formally announced through official orders issued by the Maharashtra government. The state government had initially proposed an extension for Manoj Saunik to the Central Government, led by Eknath Shinde. However, with the proposal failing to secure approval, Nitin Kareer emerged as the chosen successor.

The 57-year-old Nitin Kareer, a native of Maharashtra, has an illustrious career in the state bureaucracy. Having obtained his MBBS degree from B J Medical College in Pune and a Master’s degree in finance, he joined the Indian Administrative Services in 1988. His diverse professional journey includes roles such as Chief Executive Officer of Pune Zilla Parishad, District Collector of Sangli and Pune, Director General of Information and Public Relations, Director General of Registration, Commissioner of Pune Municipal Corporation, Divisional Commissioner of Pune, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, Sales Tax Commissioner, and Jamabandi Commissioner.

Dr. Kareer’s tenure as Chief Secretary is initially set for three months, with retirement scheduled for March 31, 2024. However, given the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, there is speculation about a potential extension. The 1987 batch IAS officer Sujata Saunik is also in line for consideration after Dr. Kareer’s term, currently managing responsibilities as the MD of Maharashtra Metro.
