Former bureaucrat UP Singh has been named as the chairman of the newly constituted National Road Safety Board functioning under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

The board will be made up of individuals with experience in a variety of areas related to traffic management and will develop guidelines for improving the abilities of traffic police and highway officials. It will give advice to the federal and state governments on managing traffic and ensuring road safety.

“In India, there are 5 lakh cases reported annually, in which 1.5 lakh individuals pass away and 3 lakh have injuries. Out of this total, 60% of fatal traffic accidents included people between the ages of 18 and 24. When discussing the state of road safety in India, Nitin Gadkari, the minister of road transport and highways, remarked, “We haven’t been able to regulate this, but we’re trying.”

Formulation of the road safety board was notified for the first time in 2021. It was part of the Motor Vehicles Amendment Act of 2019. .
