Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for connectivity projects valued at Rs 15,400 crores in Kolkata. These projects, aimed at bolstering urban mobility, encompass the development of Metro Rail and the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS).

During his visit, the Prime Minister inspected various metro projects and embarked on a metro ride along the Esplanade – Howrah Maidan route, marking India’s pioneering Underwater Metro in Kolkata. He engaged with workers and schoolchildren throughout the journey, sharing memorable moments underground.

In a series of tweets, Prime Minister Modi expressed his appreciation for the youngsters’ companionship and the project workers’ dedication. He emphasized the significance of the enhanced metro network in Kolkata, highlighting its potential to alleviate congestion and elevate connectivity standards in the city.


The inauguration of the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade Metro section, featuring the first underwater tunnel beneath a major river in India, marks a proud milestone for Kolkata. Prime Minister Modi concluded by expressing gratitude to the people of Kolkata, pledging to continue serving them with unwavering commitment.
