The Tripura government has entrusted G S Rao (IPS:1999:TR) with the additional charge of Director General of Police (DGP) following the untimely demise of Anurag Dhankar (IPS:1994:TR). The order assigning the additional responsibility was issued on July 21, 2026, ensuring continuity in the state’s police leadership.
Rao will oversee the functioning of the Tripura Police until a regular appointment is made by the government.
Additional Charge After Sudden Vacancy
The decision comes after the sudden death of DGP Anurag Dhankar, who was found dead in his office under circumstances that are currently being examined. His passing created an unexpected vacancy at the top of the state’s police administration, prompting the government to assign the responsibility to G S Rao.
As the acting DGP, Rao will supervise law and order, police administration and ongoing policing operations across the state.
No SIT Constituted Yet
Speaking on the matter, G S Rao said that no Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted so far to investigate the circumstances surrounding Anurag Dhankar’s death.
He indicated that the matter is being handled as per the existing legal and administrative procedures, while further decisions regarding the investigation will be taken by the competent authorities if required.

Ensuring Continuity in Police Administration
The appointment of G S Rao is aimed at ensuring that the functioning of the Tripura Police remains uninterrupted during the transition period. As a senior IPS officer of the Tripura cadre, Rao brings extensive administrative and policing experience to the role.
The state government is expected to take a decision on the appointment of a regular Director General of Police in due course.
