Amaravati has been officially designated as the sole capital of Andhra Pradesh following the President’s assent to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Act, 2026, bringing an end to years of uncertainty over the state’s capital status. As per the gazette notification, the decision will apply retrospectively from June 2, 2024.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu welcomed the development, calling it a historic milestone and a “long-cherished dream” fulfilled for the people of the state. “The capital of Andhra Pradesh is Amaravati,” he affirmed, while expressing gratitude to the President, Prime Minister, and all stakeholders involved in the process.
Highlighting the collective effort behind the decision, the Chief Minister acknowledged the contributions of citizens, farmers, and policymakers. He noted that the recognition of Amaravati reflects the aspirations of the people and marks a crucial step towards building a modern, world-class capital aligned with the state’s long-term development vision. Emphasising speed, governance, and development, he positioned Amaravati as a symbol of Andhra Pradesh’s growth ambitions and administrative transformation.

Although Amaravati had earlier been notified as the capital by the state government on April 23, 2016, it has now received formal legal status through the latest amendment. The Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly had passed a resolution on March 28, 2026, urging the Centre to amend Section 5(2) of the Act to grant statutory recognition.
The Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, was recently passed by Parliament, with the Rajya Sabha approving it after clearance from the Lok Sabha. The amendment to the 2014 Act formally recognises Amaravati as the state’s only capital, completing the legal framework envisioned after the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.
