Uttar Pradesh has witnessed a significant transformation in its power sector over the past few years, with improvements in electricity generation, transmission and distribution helping ensure more reliable supply across the state.

According to official figures, the state recently achieved a record peak power supply of 31,824 MW in May 2026, reflecting growing demand as well as enhanced capacity to meet consumer requirements. The milestone highlights the progress made in strengthening power infrastructure and expanding electricity access in both urban and rural areas.
From Power Shortages to Record Supply

For many years, electricity shortages and frequent outages were among the major challenges faced by households, farmers, businesses and industries across Uttar Pradesh.

Officials say the situation has changed considerably following investments in generation capacity and network strengthening. Today, district headquarters are receiving nearly round-the-clock electricity supply, while rural areas are getting more than 22 hours of power on most days.

The improvement has helped support economic activities, agricultural operations and daily life across the state, particularly during periods of peak demand.
Demand Reaches New Highs
Electricity consumption in Uttar Pradesh has continued to rise as urbanisation, industrial growth and household electrification have expanded across the state.
The state met a peak demand of more than 30,000 MW in recent years and established a new record in May 2026 by successfully supplying 31,824 MW. Officials noted that the achievement came despite intense summer conditions and a sharp increase in power consumption driven by high temperatures.
The ability to meet record demand levels is being attributed to improvements across the power value chain, including generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure.
Enhanced Supply Across Urban and Rural Areas
The government has been focusing on improving electricity availability across all regions of the state.
While district headquarters are entitled to 24-hour power supply under the existing roster, authorities have been supplying electricity beyond the prescribed schedule in several areas to meet increased demand during the summer season.
At present, metropolitan areas, district headquarters and tehsil towns are receiving nearly uninterrupted power supply. Rural areas, which once experienced long power cuts, are now receiving between 22 and 22.5 hours of electricity daily in many regions.
Officials say this marks a significant improvement compared to the situation a decade ago, when power availability was substantially lower across much of the state.
Generation Capacity Sees Major Expansion
Alongside improvements in supply, Uttar Pradesh has also expanded its power generation capabilities.
The state’s generation capacity has steadily increased over the years through capacity additions and infrastructure development. From less than 5,000 MW in 2014, the state’s installed generation capacity has grown significantly and reached 9,120 MW by March 2026.
The near doubling of generation capacity has strengthened the state’s ability to meet growing electricity demand and reduce dependence on external sources of power.
Continued Investment in Power Infrastructure
Officials said ongoing efforts are focused on further strengthening generation facilities, transmission networks and distribution systems.
Several projects are currently under development to enhance capacity and improve service reliability. Investments in modernisation and infrastructure expansion are expected to support future demand growth while maintaining stable electricity supply.
The state power utility has also been working on improving operational efficiency and ensuring uninterrupted service during periods of high consumption.
Benefits Across Sectors
Improved electricity availability is benefiting multiple sectors, including agriculture, industry, commerce and residential consumers.
Reliable power supply has supported irrigation activities, industrial production and business operations, while also improving quality of life for households. Enhanced electricity access has become an important factor in supporting economic development and attracting investment.
Officials believe that continued investments in the power sector will further strengthen Uttar Pradesh’s energy security and contribute to the state’s broader development goals.
Building a Stronger Energy Future
The record demand achievement and expansion of generation capacity underline the significant changes taking place in Uttar Pradesh’s energy landscape.
As electricity demand continues to grow, the state is focusing on strengthening infrastructure, improving service quality and ensuring that consumers across urban and rural areas have access to reliable power.
