The Himachal Pradesh government has approved the promotion of five senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers to the rank of Director General of Police (DGP). The promotions, which take effect from January 1, 2026, apply to officers from the 1995 and 1996 batches and place them in Level-16 of the Pay Matrix.
The decision strengthens the top leadership of the Himachal Pradesh Police and recognizes the long service and experience of officers working both within the state and on central deputation.
From the 1995 batch, two officers have been promoted on a proforma basis as they are currently serving in key central government positions. Satinder Pal Singh, who is posted as Additional Secretary in the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and N Venugopal, serving as Additional Director in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), have both been elevated to the DGP rank. Their promotions will not affect their present central assignments, but will ensure their seniority is maintained.
Three officers from the 1996 batch have also been promoted. Satwant Atwal Trivedi, presently serving as Additional Director General-cum-Commandant General of Home Guards, Civil Defence and Fire Services in Himachal Pradesh, has been promoted on a regular basis.
Ajay Kumar Yadav, currently posted as Principal Resident Commissioner in New Delhi, has also been elevated to the DGP rank. Abhishek Trivedi, who is serving as Additional Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services in the state, has likewise received regular promotion.
Officials said the move is part of routine administrative progression and is aimed at ensuring experienced leadership at the highest levels of the police force. Officers holding the rank of DGP are responsible for strategic planning, policy implementation, and maintaining law and order across the state.

For those on central deputation, proforma promotions allow them to continue in their existing national-level roles without affecting their career growth within the state cadre.
The promotions are expected to bring greater stability and administrative efficiency to the police leadership structure in Himachal Pradesh as the state continues to focus on modernization and improved governance in policing.
