The Uttarakhand government has appointed senior IPS officer Amit Sinha (1997 batch) as the first Vice-Chancellor of the newly established Uttarakhand Sports University. The move underscores the state’s commitment to institutionalising sports education and nurturing athletic talent through structured academic frameworks.
Currently serving as Additional Director General (ADG) and Special Principal Secretary to the government, Amit Sinha will take over the role with a one-year full-time tenure—shorter than the conventional three-year term for Vice Chancellors. The full-time classification of the role suggests that Sinha will be relieved of his current responsibilities to focus exclusively on establishing and operationalising the university.
To strengthen the institution’s administrative backbone, Ashish Chauhan, Director of Sports, has been appointed as Registrar, and VN Pandey, Finance Officer at the Sports Directorate, has been named Finance Controller of the university. These key appointments reflect the government’s urgency in creating a robust administrative framework from the ground up.
The establishment of the university is expected to provide a significant boost to sports infrastructure, coaching standards, research, and management programs across the state. Amit Sinha’s leadership is anticipated to blend bureaucratic expertise with strategic vision, laying the foundation for future-oriented sports policy and institutional innovation in Uttarakhand.
