Bureau of Energy Efficiency

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the Ministry of Power, Government of India, and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) have joined forces to establish a Centre of Excellence for Energy Transition (CoEET) in Hyderabad. This collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), underscores India’s dedication to advancing sustainable development and leading global efforts in energy transition.

The signing ceremony was held at TERI’s Institute of Energy Transition (IoET) on its Hyderabad campus. The event witnessed the presence of notable dignitaries, including Shri Manohar Lal, Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, and Shri A. Revanth Reddy, Chief Minister of Telangana, along with senior officials from the Ministry of Power, BEE, TERI, and the Government of Telangana.

Speaking at the event, Shri Manohar Lal emphasized the transformative potential of the initiative, stating, “The Centre of Excellence for Energy Transition symbolizes India’s unwavering commitment to sustainable development. By driving research, innovation, and collaboration, this initiative will position India as a global leader in the transition to a low-carbon economy.”

A Hub for Research and Innovation

The CoEET aims to become a world-class knowledge centre promoting research, innovation, and capacity-building in energy transition technologies and policies. Rooted in collaboration between industries, academia, and corporations, the Centre is designed to advance the latest technologies, facilitate knowledge exchange, and develop solutions to address energy transition challenges. Partnerships with national and international organizations will play a pivotal role in aligning India’s efforts with global sustainability goals.

Key Focus Areas

The Centre will conduct extensive research to promote low-carbon technologies, improve energy efficiency, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Its initiatives will span multiple sectors, including:

  • Industrial Applications: Advancing energy-efficient technologies like motors, HVAC systems, and smart manufacturing processes.
  • Buildings and Infrastructure: Supporting the development of green building codes, energy performance standards, and appliance labelling.
  • Transportation and Power: Promoting cleaner energy solutions for transport and enhancing efficiency in power generation, transmission, and distribution.
  • Circular Economy: Integrating practices like waste heat recovery and leveraging advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and real-time energy monitoring.

The CoEET will also develop policy and regulatory recommendations to address energy efficiency and sustainability challenges while enhancing innovation across diverse sectors.

Operational Framework

The operational management of the Centre will be overseen by TERI’s Institute of Energy Transition. A governing board, comprising representatives from BEE, TERI, and the Ministry of Power, will ensure alignment with strategic objectives. BEE has pledged financial support for the Centre’s establishment, while TERI will contribute infrastructure and expertise.
