m-pesaA programme for payment of MGNREGS wages through through a unique mobile money transfer service called m-pesa was launched at Rampa gram panchayat in Odisha’s Ganjam district, according to reports.

The service was rolled out with joint effort by Vodafone and ICICI Bank.

A beneficiary can get the wage through his/her mobile phone with Vodafone SIM provided by the telecom company for free. On dialling a secret number registered with at the time of getting the SIM, the beneficiary will be asked the amount to be withdrawn.


According to report, the system will be implemented in Rampa, R Subani, Sonepur and Jhatipadar panchayats in Chikiti block and Nandika, Dayapalli and Dhobadi panchayats in Hinjili block during the first phase.

Odisha Modernising Economy, Governance and Administration (OMEGA) is coordinating the programme from panchayat to state level.
