The President of India, Pranab Mukherjee introduced the Bichitra Tagore Variorum website recently in a function at Jadhavpur University, Kolkata.

Speaking on the occasion, the President congratulated the Jadavpur University on this fine achievement and said Bichitra would convey the message of Tagore’s art and thought across the world. He also congratulated Visva-Bharati, Harvard University and all other institutions, who have contributed a variety of valuable material available with them, on their exemplary academic collaboration for this historic variorum.

The President said Tagore’s works are a treasure which speaks of humanity’s eternal message.

The President expressed concern over developments happing in the country. He said we must ask ourselves where we are going, what direction our moral compass is pointing. From our childhood we are taught to respect our mothers, that the dignity of women is inviolable. Can we raise our heads today?

The President said while making Tagore’s works available to all, let us also remember the high moral standards he set for us. Let us reset our moral compass.
