Mohali will soon get a State Data Centre (SDC), one of the key Information Technology infrastructure elements being created in Punjab. It will provide a safe data storage facility. Punjab Information Technology Minister, Adesh Pratap Singh Kairon laid the foundation stone of the INR 12 crore project at Industrial Focal Point, Phase VIII-B, in Mohali.

Punjab Small Industries and Export Corporation (PSIEC), from which the site for the SDC was purchased for Rs 80 lakh, has been assigned the civil and construction work of the SDC building, targeted to be completed in nine months. The Punjab Information Technology Department has also finalised the proposal for IT equipment to be housed in the SDC by the System Integrator and submitted it to the Union Information Technology Department.

The setting up of the SDC will consolidate citizen services, e-governance applications and supporting infrastructure to provide efficient electronic delivery of government-to-government, government-to-citizen and government-to-business services. These will be facilitated by the Punjab Information Technology Department through a common delivery platform supported by other core infrastructure elements like State Wide Area Network (SWAN) and CSC (Common Citizen Centre), with connectivity extended up to the village level.
