The Rajasthan Transport department has embarked on a massive e-governance mission under which all its records will be computerised, even at the level of the district transport office (DTO), to prepare a state register of all vehicles and licences.

The initiative is part of a larger bid by the Central government to prepare a national register of vehicles and licences.

Officials of the department said that National Informatics Centre (NIC) is collecting data from various DTOs to upload it on the network.

'This data can be broadly divided into two categories. The first relates to details of vehicle like its registration number etc and will be recorded under the subhead Vahan. The other relates to licences under the subhead Sarathi. Once uploaded, this will comprise the district register. All districts together will make the state register. The Centre will then upload all state registers to make a national register,' the official explained.

The state has received a grant of INR17 crore from the Centre. Once the national register is made, all details pertaining to vehicles and licences will be available nationally. This will allow licence renewal from anywhere in the country.
