Issuing the draft recommendations, the telecom regulator TRAI said the usage of IPv6, a new internet protocol platform in e-Governance projects, be made mandatory to give a headstart to the deployment of this advanced technology that will expand the available IP address space, provide better service, mobility support and security.

Other major thrust of TRAI's recommendations are setting up of test beds for experimentation in IPv6 technologies, creation of a National Internet Registry in India in addition to the current Regional Internet Registry, presently located in Australia and bringing awareness about IPv6 through the government agencies. In addition, the deployment of IPv6 capable equipments in governments IT projects & networks and also in e-governance application platforms have been recommended.
