Changing face of India’s Income Tax Department

Under the National e-Governance Plan (NeGP) of Government of India, the Income Tax Department of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has initiated one of the major
e-Governance initiatives of India. Under this initiative, the entire department along with the gamut of services that it offers has been automated through a system of web-based, single-window, 24X7 service delivery model.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), India launched electronic filing of income tax returns way back on August 8, 2003, started gaining ground. Under the scheme, salaried tax payers with Permanent Account Numbers (PAN) approach a designated bank with their tax challans or Form 16 and proof of savings, to get their tax returns electronically filed.
