NMDC, GMDC

In an important step towards strengthening India’s critical mineral ecosystem, NMDC Limited and Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore collaboration in the development of rare earth elements and associated minerals.

The agreement was signed at NMDC headquarters in Hyderabad and came into effect from March 16. It will remain valid for a period of two years.

The partnership is aimed at building an integrated and sustainable critical mineral supply chain in India. This is significant because rare earth elements are becoming increasingly important for sectors such as clean energy, electronics, electric vehicles, defence, and advanced manufacturing.

Under the MoU, NMDC and GMDC will work together on the exploration of rare earth deposits, expansion of research and development capabilities, and the adoption of carbon-conscious practices in the sector. To take the collaboration forward in a structured manner, a Steering Committee and a Working Group will also be set up.

The agreement was signed in the presence of Amitava Mukherjee and Roopwant Singh, along with senior officials from both organisations.

Speaking on the development, Amitava Mukherjee said that rare earth elements have now become a strategic national priority because of their growing importance in energy security, defence preparedness, and India’s self-reliance goals. He noted that this partnership is aimed at creating a stronger and more resilient critical mineral ecosystem for the country.

The collaboration could also lead to deeper business partnerships in the future. According to the companies, they may explore the possibility of forming a joint venture, a special purpose vehicle (SPV), or other strategic business arrangements as the project progresses.

This MoU comes at a time when countries around the world are trying to secure reliable access to critical minerals that are essential for future technologies. For India, strengthening domestic exploration and supply chains in this area is not just an economic need, but also a strategic one.

Overall, the NMDC-GMDC partnership is a promising move that could help India reduce dependence on imports, encourage domestic capability in critical minerals, and support long-term industrial and technological growth.
