The Chhattisgarh government has launched the second phase of its flagship water conservation drive, Jal Sanchay–Jan Bhagidari 2.0, with an ambitious target of creating 10 lakh water conservation structures across the state by May 31, 2026. The initiative was reviewed at a high-level meeting in Nava Raipur, where Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and Union Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Patil discussed strategies to strengthen community-led water management.
Highlighting the growing challenge of water scarcity, Chief Minister Sai described water as not just an environmental concern but also an economic and social priority. He urged citizens to value water like “prasad,” using it responsibly and conserving it for future generations. The first phase of the campaign saw large-scale construction of recharge structures, rainwater harvesting systems, soak pits, and openwell recharge units, helping the state secure second place nationally in water conservation efforts.
In Phase 2, the state is adopting a technology-driven approach, including geotagging of all water structures and preparing water budgets at the Gram Panchayat level. More than four lakh farmers owning over 10 acres of land are being encouraged to construct “dabris” (farm ponds), which will not only recharge groundwater but also support irrigation and allied activities such as fish farming. Youth volunteers will be trained as “Jal Mitra” to promote awareness and ensure community participation.
Union Minister C. R. Patil praised Chhattisgarh’s progress, noting measurable improvements in groundwater levels in several blocks and calling for continued collaboration between citizens, local bodies, and administration. He also emphasised effective use of MNREGA funds for water conservation works, underlining that turning water management into a people’s movement is key to achieving long-term water security.
