NTPC Limited

In a significant development for the energy sector, NTPC Limited, India’s largest integrated energy company, has announced its plans to establish a nuclear energy project in Bihar. This initiative is part of NTPC’s broader strategy to diversify its energy portfolio by increasing the share of non-fossil energy sources. The announcement was made by Gurdeep Singh, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NTPC, during his address at the Bihar Business Connect 2024 summit.

Embracing Nuclear Energy for the Future

Speaking at the summit, Singh emphasized the growing importance of nuclear energy in the global energy landscape. He noted that nuclear energy is poised to play a pivotal role in meeting the world’s energy needs over the next two to three decades. “Looking at the future of the energy sector, nuclear energy is expected to become extremely important for the energy sector, 20-30 years down the line. I want to share that NTPC is now entering the nuclear energy space,” he stated.

To facilitate the project, NTPC has requested the Bihar state government to allocate a suitable land parcel. The site selection and feasibility studies will be conducted before moving forward with the nuclear power project. While Singh did not reveal detailed timelines or specific plans, his announcement marks a significant step in NTPC’s transition toward cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions.

Collaboration with NPCIL: A Key Milestone

NTPC’s foray into nuclear energy comes on the heels of a landmark decision by the Indian government in September. The government approved the creation of Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam Ltd (ASHVINI), a joint venture between the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) and NTPC. Under this partnership, NPCIL holds a 51% stake, while NTPC owns 49%. The venture is tasked with building, owning, and operating nuclear power plants in compliance with the Atomic Energy Act.

This collaboration positions NTPC as a key player in India’s nuclear energy landscape, enabling the company to leverage its expertise in large-scale energy projects while contributing to the nation’s clean energy goals.

Renewable Energy Initiatives in Bihar

In addition to nuclear energy, NTPC is ramping up its efforts in the renewable energy sector in Bihar. Singh highlighted the company’s interest in developing a wide range of green energy projects, including rooftop solar, ground-mounted solar, floating solar, pumped storage, and battery energy storage solutions. These initiatives align with NTPC’s ambitious target of achieving a renewable energy capacity of 60,000 MW by 2032. Singh expressed optimism about Bihar playing a significant role in this target, stating, “We look forward to having a majority share of our 60,000 MW of renewable energy capacity by the year 2032 in Bihar.”

Investment and Existing Infrastructure in Bihar

NTPC already has a robust presence in Bihar, with an installed capacity of 8,850 MW across various projects. This represents an investment of approximately ₹80,000 crore, underscoring the company’s commitment to the state’s energy development. Singh also revealed plans to explore battery storage solutions with a capacity of 3,000-4,000 MWh in Bihar. These storage solutions are expected to complement the state’s renewable energy infrastructure by ensuring reliable and efficient energy supply.

Progress on Nabinagar Power Project

Singh also provided updates on NTPC’s ongoing projects in Bihar. He informed the audience that Nabinagar Power Generating Company Ltd (NPGCL), a joint venture between NTPC and Bihar State Power Holding Company Ltd, has commenced work on a 2,400 MW power project. This project is expected to bolster Bihar’s energy capacity and contribute to its economic growth.
NTPC’s National Footprint and Future Goals

As of now, NTPC has a total installed capacity of 76,531 MW, encompassing thermal, solar, wind, and other energy sources. The company’s strategic focus on nuclear and renewable energy aligns with India’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions and transitioning to a low-carbon economy. By diversifying its energy mix, NTPC aims to play a leading role in the nation’s clean energy transformation.

Implications for Bihar and the Nation

NTPC’s plans to set up a nuclear energy project in Bihar have far-reaching implications. For Bihar, this initiative promises to enhance energy security, attract investments, and create employment opportunities. For India, it marks a significant step toward achieving the national goal of increasing the share of non-fossil energy in the country’s energy mix.

By expanding its renewable and nuclear energy portfolio, NTPC is not only contributing to sustainable development but also setting a benchmark for other energy companies. As the world moves toward a cleaner and more sustainable energy future, NTPC’s initiatives in Bihar are poised to play a pivotal role in shaping India’s energy landscape.
