In a significant development for India’s electronics manufacturing sector, Tata Group is on the brink of acquiring Pegatron Corp.’s iPhone manufacturing operations in the country, potentially boosting Apple’s reliance on Indian suppliers. According to a recent report, Tata Group is in the final stages of negotiations with Pegatron, aiming to take over its iPhone assembly operations in India as early as next month.
Under the proposed deal, Tata Electronics Ltd. is slated to manage Pegatron’s operations post-acquisition. This move underscores Tata Group’s strategic intent to secure a majority stake in Pegatron’s Apple handset assembly operations, particularly as Pegatron operates an iPhone production facility near Chennai in Tamil Nadu, with another one under construction.

Sources cited in the report suggest that post-acquisition, Pegatron is expected to lend its manufacturing expertise to Tata, further bolstering India’s electronics manufacturing capabilities.

This development aligns with Apple’s broader strategy of diversifying its supply chain away from China and expanding production in India, aided by government incentives introduced under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. The production-linked incentives aim to attract major Apple suppliers like Foxconn and Pegatron to increase manufacturing operations in India, thereby reducing reliance on Chinese manufacturing and mitigating geopolitical risks.

Moreover, recent reports indicate that Apple Inc. is in advanced discussions with Indian conglomerates Murugappa Group and Tata Group’s Titan Company to produce sub-components for iPhone camera modules. Currently, there are no Indian suppliers for iPhone camera modules, making this potential partnership a significant milestone. A decision on the partner is expected within the next five to six months.
