Bhagwati Prasad Gopalika

In a significant administrative reshuffle, the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government has appointed Bhagwati Prasad Gopalika, a seasoned IAS officer from the 1989 batch, as the new Chief Secretary of the state. Mr. Gopalika, who was serving as the Home Secretary, officially took charge on December 31, succeeding HK Dwivedi upon the conclusion of his tenure following retirement.

Born on June 1, 1964, in Andhra Pradesh, Mr. Gopalika boasts an illustrious career in various capacities, including key roles in the transport, animal resources development, and personnel and administrative reforms departments, where he held the position of secretary.

Having completed his B.Tech in electrical engineering from IIT Madras in 1988, Mr. Gopalika joined the civil services in 1989, undergoing training at the Administrative Training Institute (ATI) in Kolkata and the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) in New Delhi. His training also included visits to the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and the United States.

Commencing his career as an assistant collector in Burdwan district in 1991, Mr. Gopalika has since served in various capacities, including sub-divisional officer (SDO) of Alipurduar and Kharagpur, additional district magistrate (ADM) of Malda and Howrah, and district magistrate (DM) of Purulia, Hooghly, and South 24 Parganas districts.


Notably, Mr. Gopalika is set to hold the position of Chief Secretary for a limited period, with his retirement slated for May 31 this year unless an extension is granted. The decision was announced by the state government following a Cabinet meeting.

In another key appointment, IAS officer Nandini Chakraborty has been named the new Home Secretary of the West Bengal government, becoming the second woman officer to assume this crucial position after Lina Chakraborty. Ms. Chakraborty, who previously served as the Principal Secretary to the Bengal Governor, brings a wealth of experience to her new role.
