BBMP roping in 6000 volunteers for contact tracing work

Contact tracing has become a mammoth task for Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) as the number of COVID-19 positive cases are growing day by day. The civic body is in process of roping in 6000 volunteers for contact tracing. Bengaluru has recorded 889 cases on July 2. In order to take up the task of contact tracing, the civic body has deployed 26 probationary tahsildars who will be responsible for monitoring the situation in Assembly constituencies in the city.

As quoted by an esteemed daily, The Hindu, V Anbu Kumar, Special Commissioner (Administration), BBMP said that the civic body is trying to constitute an army of 6000 volunteers who will assist in contact tracing. The first batch of 143 volunteers was inducted on July 3, he added.

The continuous rise in cases is threatening to overwhelm the city’s resources. In the month of June, 4904 positive cases surfaced and 4476 are active cases as on July 1, according to the COVID war room report. Moreover, the report stated that officials had been able to identify 2245 primary contacts and 6350 secondary contacts as of yet. Of the total primary contacts, 902 are under quarantine, whereas, 1343 had completed quarantine. Of the secondary contacts, 1273 have been quarantined while 5077 had completed their quarantine period.

Once a person is found COVID positive the contact tracing process begins immediately, said Kumar. Further, he said, the key to check the spread of Coronavirus is to identify contacts and immediately place them under home quarantine. Moreover, he added that the information of these contacts is then shared with the Home Quarantine task force, who will monitor them and ensure that they follow the norms.
