Gujarat Chief Secretary, J N Singh has been given an extension of six months from his original tenure. Singh, the 1983-Batch officer was scheduled to retire on Friday, but has been granted the extension by the state Government, till November 30, 2019.

As per reports, the Prime Minister’s Office had instructed the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) to issue the extension order based on the recommendation from the Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.

Singh has been instrumental in tackling several crisis situations with his knowledge and expertise, such as community agitations, farmers’ unrest, drought and others.

He had assumed the office of Chief Secretary in July 2016 and took over the charges from GR Aloria, the former Chief Secretary.


Prior to joining as the Chief Secretary, Singh was the Additional Chief Secretary in the Finance Department. He has also worked in various government departments and Public Sector Undertakings. Principal Secretary, Science and Technology Department, Textile Commissioner, Mumbai, Member (Fin), NHAI, Delhi, Managing Director, Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd. He is also appointed as Chairman of Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation Limited.

An alumnus of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and MS University, he has pursued MA in International Studies and PhD in Political Economy respectively.
