Digital India Bhashini is a groundbreaking initiative designed to break down India’s language barriers using advanced AI models. Launched under the National Language Translation Mission, it delivers seamless, real-time translations across a wide range of Indian languages with exceptional accuracy that surpasses current market standards. Offering easy implementation, highly customizable solutions, and ultra-fast response times, it is poised to revolutionize digital communication across the country. In a recent conversation, Amitabh Nag, CEO, Digital India Bhashini Division, discussed with Nijhum Rudra of Elets News Network (ENN), how the platform is growing at an impressive rate of 20% per month, positioning it as a game-changer in making language more accessible, bridging communication gaps, and shaping the future of India’s digital landscape.

Edited excerpts:

1. Could you please explain why the Government of India, through MeitY, implemented the Digital India Bhashini initiative and what its purpose is?

The Digital India Bhashini initiative was formed as part of the National Language Translation Mission. The goal was to overcome language barriers by developing various AI models to bridge these gaps. These AI models were intended to be integrated and offered as a service. In essence, Digital India Bhashini serves as the platform to implement these technologies. It was created to improve the existing models developed by research and development institutes and make them accessible to users. This initiative aims to foster ecosystem engagement, enhance the AI models, and establish a comprehensive platform, which is why Digital India Bhashini was established.

2.What challenges do you face when implementing such an initiative, given our reliance on technology?

There are several challenges involved, as we are working in an emerging technology space that demands continuous improvement. It’s crucial to have the active cooperation and engagement of our customers during the implementation process. Moreover, given that technological advancements are occurring rapidly every day, we must consistently stay updated and adapt to these changes. Additionally, ensuring that this initiative holds value and aligns with a viable business proposition is another significant challenge. In essence, it’s a complex scenario where multiple factors—ranging from technological progress to customer involvement and business sustainability—come together to create an ongoing challenge.

3.What is the key differentiating factor of Digital India Bhashini?

We can effectively address the unique linguistic diversity of India. It provides highly accurate translations across various Indian languages, achieving a level of precision that is well above current market standards. This is a significant achievement, considering the complexities involved in Indian languages. Additionally, the platform’s success can be attributed to its flexibility in deploying tailored solutions that meet the specific requirements of customers. One of the most important aspects is our ability to truly understand customer needs and implement solutions that align with those needs. As a result, Digital India Bhashini has been able to deliver a range of use cases, such as a translation plugin, which is now being used by top websites and has reached high levels of adoption since January 2025.

4.What makes Digital India Bhashini stand out, particularly in terms of its ability to translate websites on demand, ease of implementation, customization, and impressive response time?

What makes Digital India Bhashini unique is its ability to seamlessly translate websites on demand. It offers easy implementation, allowing users to quickly plug it in and get started. Additionally, it is highly customizable, enabling adjustments for specific customer needs, such as unique challenges with words, brand names, or programs. Another key advantage is its impressive response time, with translations happening in under 200 milliseconds. However, the standout feature is its ability to tailor translations to meet the specific requirements of the end user, making it truly adaptable and efficient. create a good question out of it.

5.What is the level of investment the government has made in the Digital India Bhashini division?

We are experiencing a growth rate of over 20% monthly, which reflects the increasing adoption and impact of our initiatives. While the Ministry is making investments in various areas related to the broader Digital India program, the specifics of the government’s investment in the Digital India Bhashini division are best addressed by the Ministry itself. From our perspective, however, the focus remains on the ongoing growth and expansion of the division, and we are seeing a consistent upward trajectory in terms of progress and development. The growth rate of approximately 20% each month is a testament to the increasing demand for our services and the value they are providing to users.
