Mobile-ID service launched in Estonia

The mobile operator, EMT, has launched a new Mobile-ID service in Estonia in cooperation with Certification Authority-AS Sertifitseerimiskeskus. Mobile ID is based on traditional eID card and digital signing through the mobile phone.

The phone's SIM card becomes a proper ID document just like the eID card. More than 600 people are already using this service introduced under the Infosecurity 2009 initiative, also known as 'Computer Protection 2009' initiative. The customer has to subscribe to the Mobile-ID service agreement with participating telecommunication services providers and change his phone's SIM-card to use a Mobile-ID. The new SIM-card with added functionalities bears regular PIN-codes and PUK-codes as well as codes needed for identification over the Internet and for using digital signature. The company will enhance its security features by the implementation of a next phase in cooperation with the Citizenship and Migration Board.
