On the occasion of the Government Leaders Forum, held at Jakarta Indonesia between 8th and 9th of May 2008, the telecentre team of Centre for Science Development and Media Studies (CSDMS) met with Noeleen Heyzer, Under Secretary General, United Nations and Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).
From a modest beginning with three colleges, two faculties and 750 students, Delhi University has now acquired the stature of being the largest central University in India with 79 colleges, 14 faculties and an expansive student body of 3,70,000 students.
B R Ambedkar Open University was the first open university to be set up in India. Initially known as Andhra Pradesh Open University, its establishment was an affirmative action on the part of the state government for providing opportunities of higher education to all sections of society.

In spite of our significant efforts and achievements in the post-independent era in India even now one-third of the adult population is illiterate, only 12% of the school eligible age children complete 10th standard, and only 10% of the university eligible age group gets enrolled in our 18600 colleges and 360 Universities. Can conventional methods cope up this scale of educational challenges?
