Representatives from 21 countries of Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) have signed a new agreement on several issues including cyber security and universal access. Dubbed as the ‘Bangkok Declaration’, signed at the APEC Ministerial Meeting on Telecommunications and Information Industry (or TELMIN) in Thailand.

Around 87 percent of Europeans GPs now use a computer, out of which 80 percent are using electronic patient records, according to the Europe-wide survey. The survey, which involved almost 7,000 General Practitioners, was carried out in late 2007.
The Government of India will soon invite tenders from telecom service providers to set up rural networks for which subsidy would be provided from the Universal Service Obligation (USO) Fund. Around INR 99 billion fund is lying with the centre.
The Perlis government is undertaking a RM500 million project to implement high speed broadband access for businesses and schools. The project will also provide e-Government applications as well as broadband access at minimal monthly fees for businesses.

The Department of Information Technology announced that the year 2008 will be roll out year for Information and Communication Technology in the country.
In order to expand broadband connectivity to rural areas under the purview of Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF), the Indian Telegraph Rules have been amended. The Indian Telegraph has added stream IV under the title ‘Provision of broadband connectivity to villages in a phased manner’.
