Tanzania cabinet endorses e-government

A workshop was convened to establish Tanzania Parliamentary Network for ICT for Development (ParlNet ICT D Tanzania) simply dubbed BungeNet. The Cabinet has officially endorsed establishment of electronic-government (e-government), as part of the ambition to turn the country into a hub of information and communication technology in Africa. This initiative to be co-ordinated by the Public Service Department, would enable the government to collect and hold vast amounts of locally relevant information.

Taking a cue from the airline industry, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is planning an e-ticketing initiative. The project will enable customers to get printed tickets in the comfort of their homes, without the intervention of a third party.

The income-tax department is planning to launch the Online Tax Accounting System (OLTAS) from June 1. The move is part of the several assessee-friendly measures being planned by the department to get the Tax Information Network going. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), India launched electronic filing of income tax returns way back on August 8, 2003, started gaining ground. Under the scheme, salaried tax payers with Permanent Account Numbers (PAN) approach a designated bank with their tax challans or Form 16 and proof of savings, to get their tax returns electronically filed.

India Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC) is planning to start e-ticketing in Mumbai and Chennai soon looking at the immense success of the e-ticket services from New Delhi. At present reserved tickets which are booked through internet are being printed and delivered only from New Delhi. The process takes 3-4 days to reach the prospective passengers. In order to curtail the delay to deliver printed tickets to passengers, the IRCTC has now planned to install hub stations in Chennai and Mumbai for printing tickets to cater to the needs of the South and West Zone passengers respectively.
