Gujarat Govt takes strict actions on non-payment of wages

To ensure the payment of wages to the workers employed under the private sector, the Government of Gujarat has decided to set up a control room at the labour commissioner’s office and a toll-free helpline number to answer the workers’ grievances regarding their unpaid wages. Further, the government asked district collectors across the state to make sure that the labourers and workers get their wages paid even during this time of lockdown due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Vipul Mittra, Additional Chief Secretary (ACS), Labour and Employment said, “A notification has been issued by the government directing the employers to pay full wages of the workers, both formal and informal workers including domestic help.” However, the directions are being followed in the state but in case a complaint is filed regarding non-payment of wages, strict actions are taken against the employers by collectors and concerned officers, added Mittra.

Complaints can also be made on official numbers and official twitter handle said Mittra. Officials from the labour department are also conducting surprise checks and taking suo motu action for timely redressal of grievances. Further, the ACS also held a video conference with all district labour officials and asked them to take necessary actions against commercial establishments, shops, industries in answer to complaints regarding non-payment of wages.
