IndiaAI Mission

In a major move towards ethical AI governance, the Indian government is set to launch four Responsible Artificial Intelligence (RAI) tools between September and December this year under the ‘Safe and Trusted AI’ pillar of the ₹10,000 crore IndiaAI Mission.  These tools—focused on machine learning, bias mitigation, risk evaluation, and fairness assessment—will be hosted on the government’s upcoming AI platform, AIKosh, according to IndiaAI Mission COO Kavita Bhatia.

Bhatia revealed that over 400 AI tool proposals, including technologies for deepfake detection and watermarking AI-generated content, are currently under evaluation. Once finalized, these tools will be made available as open-source resources to support transparency and innovation.

In tandem, the government will also identify 30 AI application development projects within the next month across critical domains such as healthcare, agriculture, climate change, governance, and learning disabilities.

The ‘Safe and Trusted AI’ initiative is one of seven foundational pillars of the IndiaAI Mission, which also includes the IndiaAI Innovative Centre, Datasets Platform, Futureskills Programme, Startup Financing, and Compute Infrastructure.

India’s proactive stance on responsible AI has drawn praise from experts. Alpan Raval, Chief AI/ML Scientist at Wadhwani AI, cited the successful deployment of an AI-driven oral reading fluency assessment tool in Gujarat schools, using open-source models from AI4Bharat. Sourav Banerjee, CTO and Co-founder of United We Care, also commended the growing emphasis on ethical AI across sectors.

With AIKosh set to go live, India is positioning itself as a global leader in developing secure, inclusive, and ethically aligned artificial intelligence solutions.
