Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has appointed former Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda as the party’s working president. The decision was taken at the party’s meeting of the parliamentary board which was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

Owing to his absence from the Cabinet, it was speculated that Nadda would hold a key post in the party. In the run-up to the 2019 general elections, Nadda was in-charge of BJP’s election campaign in Uttar Pradesh. Nadda is also a member of the BJP parliamentary board.
Amit Shah will continue to hold the position of BJP Chief. Shah’s tenure as president was scheduled to end in January 2020, following the one-year extension just months before the recently-concluded 2019 general elections.
In a first, the party has appointed a working President in the presence of a full-time party president.
Nadda will continue as working president till the BJP’s organisational election are over. A three-time MLA, Nadda represents Himachal Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha and was the Union Health Minister in the previous term of the ruling government.
