Apart from the broadcast vertical, BECIL has forayed into the areas of construction of radio towers, repair and maintenance, e-classroom, providing screens to hospitals or schools, streaming of videos, and community radio. This is how we are expanding into various areas with technological solutions attached to broadcasting work frame, says George Kuruvilla, Chairman & Managing Director, Broadcast Engineering Consultants India Limited (BECIL) in conversation with Souvik Goswami of Elets News Network (ENN).

What role do you foresee for BECIL in India’s digital transformation process?

BECIL is into the broadcast engineering domain. We look after the television and the radio production. We also look at the transmission of TV, radio and satellite and cable television. Whatever we are doing has a lot of synergy with the telecom and the IT. We have entered telecommunication, last-mile connectivity, fibre connectivity and ICT-based e-governance projects. In due course, we also realised that in many locations Radio Frequency (RF) can be used to connect one place to another.

I also find BECIL getting involved in the fibre technology whereby we can use the power of networking, power of radio frequency, the coding and the inscriptions technique. The storage is becoming smarter with the introduction of technology. We realised that every State government and the institution will require data storage. They will require a proper mechanism to maintain the records, dynamic websites, management information system, payment gateways. The e-governance is going to overtake everything. In all these areas, BECIL fits in. We can handle end-to-end solutions of all these areas.

How BECIL is expanding in terms of finding new avenues of work?

Though BECIL is mainly into broadcast engineering domain, in past few years we have realised there is convergence in the field of technology, like broadcasting, communication, IT. Along with that we also realised whether it’s a government or put it in this way- CCTV means we are talking about camera. Whether it is audio or video input, it becomes same process as we follow in TV or radio studio which is connected with a centralised control room. Along with these comes, video analytics, Artificial Intelligence (AI) as it is all about collecting and handling huge amount of data coming from cameras placed in multiple locations. It requires skills of analytics at the backend to monitor video footages.

We have done several projects in last two years in the areas of CCTV, surveillance, access control, providing analytical software. BECIL has also expanded its base in the smart city ecosystem. Shed some light on that. We are actively looking at the opportunities in Smart Cities space, especially when it comes to LED lighting. Be it building or street lighting of an entire area, these all are technology driven unlike past. LED lighting is based on ambient light mode of a day or night, which stops wastage of energy as it no more remains human intervention depended to operate. It brings in lot of efficiency and saving. It is again driven by technology related to command control centre. We have entered into Smart Lighting business too as it is based on technology and we have the competency in that field. We have also ventured into social media business. BECIL is engaged with various central and state government agencies to do the work of social media analytics.

What made BECIL get into HR domain?

We have realised an opportunity in this sector and we believe that we have expertise in this too. That’s why BECIL is also focusing on human resource deployment segment in a big way. Be it conducting online examinations, using technology to streamline processes for various State government agencies for vacancies, we are aggressively engaging ourselves in this sector. private institution or any other public sector undertakings, everybody is looking for turnkey solutions. When it comes to turnkey solutions, we don’t look at studio alone.

But it also requires providing over all solutions.
