Greek national telco OTE has chosen equipment from US-based Aperto Networks to deploy a pilot WiMAX network at Mount Athos in the Halkidiki region, Greek.
The Government has chosen Aperto's Greek distributor, to install the wireless broadband infrastructure, as well as providing ongoing support. Heletel will deploy Aperto's PacketMAX 5000 base stations, and its PM 100 subscriber units, PM20 indoor VoIP gateway routers, and a WaveCenter EMS Pro element management system. OTE is holding a 3.5GHz point-to-multipoint nationwide wireless licence and is currently providing telephony services to approximately 200,000 residential users in remote areas across Greece. The former monopoly aims to build a nationwide 3.5GHz network to offer consumers and businesses broadband internet access alongside a wide range of data communications services, including MPLS, VPN, leased line, VoIP, telemedicine, e-Education, e-Governance and e-Commerce.
