Under the guidance of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Uttar Pradesh has emerged as an effective national model in the fight against malnutrition. Owing to the proactive efforts of the Mahila Evam Bal Vikas Vibhag and the Bal Vikas Seva Evam Pushtahar Yojana, the Take Home Ration (THR) Scheme being implemented across the state is providing renewed strength to maternal and child nutrition. By integrating nutrition, technology, transparency and women’s empowerment, the initiative has earned appreciation at the national level.
The Yogi government has effectively implemented a recipe-based supplementary nutrition system in line with the Government of India’s Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0 guidelines and the National Food Security Act, 2023. Uttar Pradesh has become the first state in the country to operationalize this new system on a large scale.
At present, nutritious food is being delivered every month to nearly 15.6 million beneficiaries across the state. These include children aged six months to six years, pregnant women, lactating mothers and severely malnourished children.
Under the guidance of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the initiative has gone beyond ration distribution, with its positive impact clearly reflected in health indicators.
According to data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS), the prevalence of stunting among children in Uttar Pradesh declined from 39.7 percent in 2015-16 to 31.5 percent during 2019-21. Significant improvements have also been recorded in the prevalence of underweight and wasting among children. This achievement demonstrates that the Yogi government’s nutrition policy is delivering tangible results at the grassroots level.
Under the scheme, specially designed nutrition products are being prepared for different age groups. Products such as Shishu Amrit, Shishu Aahar, Bal Pushtikar and Sampoorna Matru Aahar are providing balanced and nutritious food to children and women. Additionally, energy-rich products such as Arogya Poshan, Bal Sanjeevani and Saksham Poshan have been introduced for children.
The Yogi government has integrated the entire supply chain with modern technology to ensure transparency and accountability. Through GPS tracking, QR codes and OTP-based verification systems, every packet is being digitally monitored. This has made the distribution process more transparent and ensured the timely delivery of quality nutrition products to beneficiaries.
The scheme is also setting a new benchmark in women’s empowerment. Responsibility for the production and supply of Take Home Ration has largely been entrusted to women self-help groups associated with the Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission.
At present, more than 4,000 women across the state are engaged with these production units, gaining employment and self-employment opportunities. This has not only strengthened their economic position but has also provided fresh momentum to the rural economy.
